Scientific name:Meganyctiphanes norvegica Krill look like smallshrimp but do not have the characteristically abrupt 'shrimp-bend'. They have large black eyes and under the abdomen are rows of light organs which can be lit up or extinguished. They can reach 5 cm long and live for 2-3 years. Krill are caught with special trawls and fine-mesh dip nets allied with lights.

Scientific name: Fish treated with only small quantities of salt (e.g.16 to 20 parts per 100 of fish) of left in salt for a short time only (e.g. 3 to 5 days in pickle); product contains 20% to 30% salt on a dry basis; cod and other white fish salted this way.
